Anal Fistula Treatment

An anal fistula is a small tunnel that forms between the end of the bowel and the skin around the anus. The tunnel is formed when an infection or abscess in the anal gland drains through a small opening in the tissue. Anal fistulas are usually painful and can cause bleeding.

There are several treatment options for anal fistulas. The goal of treatment is to heal the fistula and relieve symptoms. Treatment may include antibiotics, surgery, or a combination of both. Surgery is often necessary to remove the infected tissue and close the Fistula.

Anal fistula treatment involves making a small incision in the skin around the anus. The surgeon then inserts a tube into the fistula and drains the pus or blood. The surgeon may also place a seton, which is a piece of thread, through the fistula to keep it open so it can heal from the inside out.

After anal fistula treatment, it is important to keep the area clean and dry. The surgeon will give you specific instructions on how to care for your wound. Anal fistulas can take several weeks or months to heal completely.
